What to wear on Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving isn’t the easiest day to figure out what to wear. It depends on if you are cooking, hanging out with the kids or trying to impress his parents. You know someone is going to be taking pictures, so make sure to wear something stylish yet comfortable.

When you are the hostess

If you are the one cooking and hosting Thanksgiving dinner, it’s important to wear something comfortable and machine washable. Skip the billowy sleeves and bangle bracelets. No one wants your sleeve or jewelry dipping in the gravy or cranberry sauce, especially you. Another tip is to put on an apron when you are in the kitchen to avoid mishaps and stains. Also, you probably want to wear flats. You are going to be running around all day making sure everything is just right. You don’t want tired, aching feet when it’s all over.

When you are a guest

If you are visiting family or friends for Thanksgiving dinner, think about who is on the guest list. A plunging neckline, for example, definitely isn’t appropriate around your grandparents or your boss. Most of the time, your best bet is to keep it simple. Partner soft trousers with a blouse or sweater that you’d wear to the office. Add unique accessories like an antique brooch, patterned tights or a vintage bag. If you can’t figure out what to wear, ask the hostess. When you’ve never been to someone’s home for the holidays, you never know how casual (or formal) it might be.

When you are meeting his parents

If you have a new man in your life, the holiday season is probably when you’ll meet his parents and family for the first time. When meeting your man’s parents, dress conservatively. Silk pants and a ruffled blouse or a knee-length skirt and a cardigan are good choices. If he says his family is more casual or you are going to be spending time outdoors, dark wash jeans, a cute sweater and ballet flats will look adorable.

When it comes to color, everyone knows black makes you look thinner. However, an all black outfit isn’t exactly festive. Experiment with other colors for Thanksgiving. Mustard yellow, burnt orange and chocolate brown are all fabulous shades that are perfect for the holiday.
