Fashion tips for holiday travel

When you are out of town for the holidays, your wardrobe is limited. After all, there’s only so much you can pack. With these helpful fashion tips and style suggestions, you’ll look fabulous wherever you are headed this holiday season.

Dress comfortably on the plane

No matter who is meeting you at the airport, if your flight is more than an hour, it’s imperative to dress comfortably on the plane. You want to be able to relax and catch some sleep if you can. During the holiday season, you need to nap whenever possible. If you want to look picture-perfect when you step off the plane, keep a well-stocked makeup bag and a change of clothes in your carry-on.

Rely on separates

You can’t bring your whole closet when you go out of town. Therefore, you’ll need neutral separates (or those in the same color family) that can mix and match. Pack a combination of dressier and more casual pieces — you want clothing that is versatile. Also, use a jewelry roll to keep your pretty little things organized and undamaged.

Stick with classics

Whether you are meeting your boyfriend’s parents for the first time or staying with your great Aunt Faye, understated yet classic outfits are your best bets. Your foundation pieces should be basic neutrals, but also include some colorful tops and accessories to avoid looking too drab.

Pick the right fabrics

You don’t want to waste your precious holiday vacation ironing. Choose fabrics that travel well and resist wrinkles. Don’t over pack your suitcase — this will cause unwanted wrinkles and creases. Remember to place shoes on the bottom of your bag. Roll softer clothes and fold the stiffer ones.

Generally, T-shirts, cotton pants, soft knits, underwear, socks and jeans can be rolled. Place the rolled items in the suitcase first, and then your folded garments on top. Put plastic dry cleaning bags or tissue paper in between each layer of clothing. This will allow the clothes to slip around a bit and not stay in one place long enough for wrinkles to set.
