How to set realistic resolutions for the New Year

It’s that time of year again: New Year’s resolutions! Whether you love them or hate them, New Year’s resolutions are a part of our yearly rituals and it’s hard to avoid them. If you’re used to setting resolutions and dropping them before February, we’ve got some tips to help you keep those promises!

Less is more

Your New Year’s resolutions should not read like a long, neverending grocery list. If you really want to keep your resolutions and improve your life, it’s best to start off with a few goals that are really near and dear to you. In other words, don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you vow to have 10 resolutions, you’re bound to fail and feel overwhelmed.

Resolve to take baby steps

Whether you’re hoping to kick your smoking habit or lose 50 pounds, you need to set realistic goals. Setting up a resolution calendar can help you keep on track and avoid any pitfalls. Taking baby steps can help you really stick to your resolutions because you’ll be able to really track your progress and feel good about how far you’ve come.

Know yourself

If you’ve got a major sweet tooth, are you really going to be able to give up desserts entirely? Likely not! Knowing your own strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes can help you gauge the level of your resolutions and help you set goals you’re capable of realistically achieving. It’s alright to challenge yourself, but don’t make outrageous resolutions you’re likely to abandon after a day or two just because it’s the “right” thing to do.
