5 Ways to break out of a hair rut

If you haven’t changed your hairstyle in years and your go-to look is a simple ponytail, you may need a change. If almost every day is a bad hair day, then it’s time to break out of your hair rut.

Go short

Though your current hairstyle is tried and true, it may also be a bit boring. This season, dare to go short. Summertime is perfect for short hair because it’s easy to manage and is much cooler. If you don’t want to go super short with a pixie cut, try a short bob that falls between chin- and shoulder-length.

Try a new color

If you want to keep your current trusted hairstyle, you can still make a change by experimenting with color. A new hair color will add some oomph to your look. For summer, go with a lighter shade, add multi-dimensional highlights and lowlights, or try out the pastel trend.

Braid it

Braids are all the rage right now, from Katniss’ braid from The Hunger Games to the sophisticated fishtail braid. If you can’t braid your own hair, team up with a friend and braid for each other. Braids are great in humid, hot or windy weather because they keep your hair off your face.

Switch stylists

Even the best stylist falls into a routine. Take a risk and switch hair stylists. Instead of going to the top salon in town, look for someone’s hair that you love — then ask her which stylist she uses. When your get to the salon, instead of micromanaging your haircut, invite the stylist to make suggestions for the best hairstyle for your face shape and lifestyle.

Play with hair accessories

For a simple change that can have a big impact, try hair accessories. Headbands and scarves are popular right now, as are leather ponytail holders, crystal-encrusted clips and colorful barrettes. Check out these hot hair accessories for spring.
