5 Summer hairstyles to beat the heat

Check out these five trendy hairstyles that will leave you looking hot and feeling cool this summer.

Halo braid

A couple of months back, Scarlett Johansson wore a gorgeous braided halo hairstyle at a movie premiere, and since then, we’ve been seeing it everywhere. If you can French braid, you can easily create this look. You simply begin a French braid in the middle of the back of your head and draw hair into it from along your hairline. You continue around your head, making a horizontal braid that encircles your entire head.

Top knot

Kim Kardashian is a big fan of the classic top knot and it’s easy to understand why. This summer hairstyle is very easy to do and it’s also very elegant. Gather all your hair into a ponytail very high on the top of your head. Wrap your hair around itself to create a bun on the top of your head, tucking the ends underneath the bun.

Sock bun

The sock bun is similar to the top knot, but you cheat a little bit to give this hairstyle some height. Cut the toe off a clean, unwanted sock and then roll it into a donut. Pull your hair into a high ponytail and secure it with an elastic. Slide the sock donut over the ponytail and slide it down to the base so that the sock is against your head. Then, you simply spread your hair evenly around the sock to create the bun and add another hair elastic to secure your hair around the outside of the bun. Make sure the fabric of the sock isn’t showing.

Classic chignon

Sophisticated and sweet, the chignon can work for daytime or night. Finger-comb your hair into a ponytail at the crown (or a little lower if you’d like) and tie with an elastic. Tease the tail to add some volume and then wrap your hair around the elastic to form the chignon. Secure with bobby pins and mist with hairspray.

Loose side braid

If you still want to wear your hair down but need to be a little cooler, pull it into a ponytail at the base of your neck — choosing one side or the other. Braid loosely. Don’t be concerned with any stray hairs; this look isn’t supposed to be overly polished.

Summer hair care tips

To maintain healthy hair this summer, board certified dermatologist Zoe D. Draelos, MD, FAAD recommends people also follow these tips:

  • Wash oily hair more frequently. If your scalp is oily, you may need to wash it as often as once a day. If you have chemically-treated hair, your hair may be drier, so you may want to wash it less frequently. Normal hair usually needs to be washed every other day, but you should rinse your hair whenever you get out of the chlorine or salt water.
  • Condition often. Using a conditioner can significantly improve the look of damaged or weathered hair by increasing shine, decreasing static electricity, improving strength and offering some protection from harmful UV rays. Choose a shampoo and conditioner formulated specifically for your hair type.
  • Protect hair when swimming. Protect your hair by wetting and conditioning it before swimming. Wear a tight-fitting swim cap whenever possible. If you swim regularly, use a specially formulated swimmers’ shampoo and deep conditioner after swimming to replace lost moisture.
