Designer Tracy Reese knew what was she was getting into when she designed the dress First Lady Michelle Obama wore to the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Still, the buzz surprised the Detroit-based designer.
“I’m flattered. It’s interesting how much conversation got generated about her dress and nails,” Reese told InStyle after the speech.
She might have been surprised, but the up-and-comer also knew to take advantage of the interest. Enter: The Pink Wallpaper Combo Frock, now available on the designer’s website for $398.
“A floral jacquard design covers the bodice of a sleeveless frock in a feminine, fit and flare silhouette complete with a multi-colored hemline,” reads the description on the website.
Obama knows the power of an outfit.
“The last thing I want to worry about is what I’m wearing,” she told Inside Edition in October. Still, she knows she has to be strategic about it.
“People look for the message in everything I wear,” the FLOTUS added. “So in the end I’m doing what women do. It’s like, how do I feel? What looks right? What kind of movement do I need? What’s practical when it comes right down to it?”
At least she never has to worry about a lack of available outfits. Designers ranging from Oscar de la Renta to Alexander McQueen clamor to get M.O.’s attention. Still, she seems to favor smaller designers. Jason Wu was relatively unknown before Obama wore his dress to the 2009 Inaugural Ball.
Will the same happen for Tracy Reese? It’s still too early to tell, but she’s trying her best.
