2013 Golden Globes makeup report

My absolute favorite awards show is the Golden Globes — we get to see our favorite film and television stars rocking the red carpet with ease. It’s an elegant night, yet not stuffy, so more celebrities feel the freedom to play up their various looks. This year, the lovely ladies of the Globes kept it fresh, glamorous and sexy. I got to catch up with a few celebrity makeup artists who gave me some amazing tips on how to get these looks at home.

Natural, glowy skin is in!

This look was hotter than ever with celebs like Kate Hudson, Sienna Miller, Amanda Seyfried, Heidi Klum and more keeping it simple and understated, yet looking completely flawless. How do they get this perfect complexion? Makeup artist to the always gorgeous Fergie, Victoria Radford, has a fun secret: “The key to looking like you have perfect skin is to use your hands. Pour your foundation into your hands, then rub hands together to warm up the makeup — this breaks down the pigment and makes it easier to apply for a more natural look.”

If the idea of using your hands isn’t your style, celebrity makeup artist Allan Avendano swears by the Beauty Blender. It’s that little pink, egg-shaped sponge that almost everyone in Hollywood uses to get their foundation looking picture perfect. Avendano says, “It is essential for getting that flawless complexion.” Keep it looking airy with my personal fave — Wet ‘N Wild’s CoverAll Cream Foundation (brand new and available in all major drugstores in February 2013). For a daytime look, go with a tinted moisturizer like the ever-dewy Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Tinted Moisturizer — I also love this one because of the SPF 15 protection as well.

Glam is always in style

Next up, the super glam, glam look. This classic, Old Hollywood vibe always makes an appearance on the Golden Globes carpet, but this year there was a kaleidoscope of varying lip colors and wing-tipped eyeliner. Instead of everyone wearing the signature red lip, there were hues of bright tangerine (a la Jessica Alba) and beautiful berry as seen on Modern Family star Sarah Hyland this year.

Hyland’s makeup artist Allan Avendano says the inspiration for her look came from her black Max Azria Atelier dress — stylish, modern and sultry. For her lips, Avendano used MAC lip liner in Spice and MAC lipstick in Captive. For her eyes, Avendano says to take the darkest color in your eyeshadow palette and buff it into the outer corners and lightly into the crease to create dimension to the simple, elegant eyes.

Shape your eyes and give yourself a wing tip with gel liner for a more sultry look. Avendano used MAC Fluidline Gel Liner in Blacktrack on Hyland for the Golden Globes but I also am obsessed with Wet ‘N Wild’s MegaEyes Creme Liner in Black for $4 (hello, amazing price and you get a cute little angle brush with purchase — score).

Smoky and sexy eyes

Last but not least, the sexy, smoky eye — the most dramatic look on the carpet. Who did it best? Megan Fox, Claire Danes, Jennifer Lawrence and Julianne Hough are at the top of my list. Celebrity makeup artist and owner of Flawless Faces in Orange County Carina Lindgren says less is definitely more when it comes to getting this look.

A lot of people think they need to pile on the dark eyeshadow and black liner, but that will just end up making your eyes look smaller. Lindgren’s tip? Brushes. “You want the smoky eye to look blended and brushes are key. Make sure to use a dark hued eyeshadow to rim the inner waterline with a MAC 266 brush,” states Lindgren, “For the lid, I like Shu Uemura Me Silver — perfect taupey gray, then darken the corners with an intense gray or even black shadow with MAC’s 217 crease brush.”

Fergie Ferg’s makeup artist Victoria Radford says she likes “illegal amounts of mascara” for this particular look. I’m big on lashes looking big, but not clumpy, so my go-to is Falsies Mascara by Maybelline — makes them wide, thick and super voluminous.

The red carpet at the Golden Globes was filled with so much beauty this year — jam packed with trends I know I can’t wait to incorporate into my everyday look. What’s extra cool is my friends at Wet ‘N Wild Cosmetics are giving away a special Golden Globes Red Carpet Gift Bag, full of 25 products to get your favorite looks at home. There will be five lucky ladies who receive the bags, so be sure to go to SheKnows.com to enter to win. Good luck!
