Your favorite pastels aren’t just for Easter and spring picnics anymore. Pastels go hand-in-hand with spring, with their light and airy vibe — and they are huge on the trend scene this season!
Minty fresh
“Mint in particular is very big this season. Because it is a cool hue, it coordinates well with other colors. It’s also an instant way to freshen up previous season’s colors while staying on trend,” says Natasha Fussell, online stylist at Lonnys.com.
Hitting the red carpet
The pastel trend for spring/summer 2013 has already shown itself at the recent Golden Globes and SAG Awards with starlets adorning the shades of light Champagne pinks, ice blues and every shade of white and cream you can imagine.
Easy does it
For those of us looking to add these colors into our wardrobes, try mixing a light pink fitted T-shirt like this one available at Spreadshirt.com with a pair of jade colored skinny jeans, like these (available at Target for less than $25) and a basic white cardigan or boyfriend sweater to bring it all together. And remember, if you are afraid to go head to toe color, just add white in as it goes with all pastel colors.
The chicest way to rock pastels is with a sleek, solid and feminine mini dress, says Sara Cooper, a New York-based fashion and wardrobe stylist. This pastel purple dress (seen on right) from Opening Ceremony is a staple for spring — it can be worn day or night and is perfectly pretty and feminine. It can be worn with no jewelry and neutral pumps for a more classic style and would be just as fun layered with a bib necklace and platforms for a more downtown style.
Another personal favorite is this pastel pink ruffle dress from Sonia By Sonia Rykiel. It’s uber-feminine and even though it’s got a flirty ruffle, it’s basic enough to pair with a fun cocktail ring and earrings. Pastels always look best paired with metallic, nude or white shoes.
Mix and match
Another fun idea is to mix pastels and graphic prints like these outfits from Fashion Week San Diego designer Sameerah Yasmeen Corporal for SYC Collection.
For a perfect complement to your look, strut your stuff in these fierce mint Truth or Dare by Madonna heels (seen at the left)! They would look amazing with this sheath dress from Elle by Kohl’s.
“Pastel has always been a spring season trend, but this year it’s being used in pieces like suits (Calvin Klein) and again in denim. We’re also seeing a lot of pastel being used in prints like florals and exotics, and then being mixed and matched by pairing different separates. Roberto Cavalli, Erdem and Donna Karan are a few other examples of designers who showed pastels on the runway,” says Nicolle Keogh, Fashion Editor at Justluxe. The message? There’s no wrong way to wear it!
How to start?
Pair a pastel blouse with boyfriend jeans in a lighter wash and a fitted neutral blazer. The toughness and structure of both the denim and blazer is a nice contrast to the softness of the blouse. If you care to take the trend head-to-toe pastel, try experimenting with colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel. Mint green and strawberry, violet and lemon yellow and cloud blue and apricot are lovely as rainbow sorbet when worn together.
