Spring trend watch: Graphic prints

Black and white, and combinations thereof, is the number one trend this season in everything from jackets to tops to skirts and dresses. Graphic patterns and shapes, stripes and checkerboards lead the way.

Graphic patterns are everywhere

This season, we’re seeing colorblock dresses, denim, structural jackets and blazers. It’s a time of op-art mod interpretation with chic pointed toe black and white flats or black and white oxford lace-ups and black and white handbags. The trend celebrates geometric shapes and was created to complement your new black and white wardrobe.

“The graphic print trend has always been popular but is gaining momentum this year in a different way than years past,” says Nicolle Keogh, Fashion Editor, Justluxe. Instead of including graphic print as a small accent on a solid-colored piece, we’re seeing big, bold, colorful graphic prints being used as a main attraction. Monique Lhuillier, Mara Hoffman, Anna Sui and Dolce & Gabbana are just a few of the designers that sent heavily-patterned looks down the runway. Better yet, we’re seeing a number of different style patterns this season — floral, exotic, animal and checkered prints in bold colors all stole the spotlight on the runways.

Take a dip

Poolside is the best place for anyone to do graphic prints. Anyone can have fun with bright, funky prints on swimwear without feeling like a clown, says Sara Cooper, a fashion and wardrobe stylist based in New York City. This printed one piece swimsuit from Mara Hoffman is one of her personal favorites! Paired with a sheer jumpsuit or linen top and some metallic sandals, you are guaranteed to make a splash at any pool party.

Mix and match

A super fun way to rock the graphic print trend is to mix similar colored prints like these shorts, top and cardigan from Prabal Gurung for Target.
