Skin care in your 30s
“Time for some AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids),” says Dr. Kunin. “30 is still young but the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) is thickening due to early hormonal changes, developing pools of excess pigment (due to pregnancy, BCP use and cumulative sun damage) and generally looking dull and drab.” Despite use of retinoids, adding in a cleanser or moisturizer containing buffered glycolic acid will leave skin looking vibrant, refreshed and more youthful. Look for at least an 8 percent level of buffered glycolic acid.
Fine lines and wrinkles
Starting to see fine lines and wrinkles? Don’t worry, it’s normal! Dr. Connolly advises that at this age, a few lines are beginning to emerge. Free radicals from UV radiation and pollutants are creating havoc on the skin. Gentle exfoliation is your best friend (as are diamonds, but we digress).
Vivite C+E Complex used daily helps improves skin texture through the use of antioxidants (free radical scavengers). Vivite Vibrance Therapy once a day utilizes 15 percent glycolic with retinol (a gentle precursor to Retin A) to exfoliate and smooth. Vivite Daily Facial Cleanser with 12 percent glycolic provides exfoliation in an effective yet gentle formulation.
Antioxidants are super important as well: These ingredients help protect the skin from environmental and ultraviolet damage and can help to restore collagen fibers. “In the 30s is the perfect time to dip your toes into anti-aging skin care. There are an extensive number of antioxidant skin care products available with some of the key ingredients being vitamin C, vitamin E, coffee berry, green tea, flavanoids and coenzyme Q10,” says Dr. Peterson. Many antioxidant containing skin creams contain a combination of antioxidants, which can work together to improve the signs of aging. Dr. Peterson likes Skinceuticals Phloretin CF Serum (vitamin C, phloretin, ferulic acid) and Eucerin Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Sensitive Skin Creme (coenzyme Q10, vitamin C & E).
Skin brighteners
A recent study found the presence of brown spots on the skin was interpreted as the most aging skin feature. Brown spots often present in our late 20s and 30s and can result from melasma (brown patches on the face worsened with hormones (pregnancy, birth control pills) and sun exposure along with brown sun spots. Over the counter hydroquinone is available in a 2 percent strength (Ambi Fade Cream), with higher percentages requiring a prescription. Twice daily usage for two to three months can fade these brown spots, says Dr. Peterson.
