The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week kicked off on Thursday — and we’re loving the rich, vibrant colors we’re seeing on the runway. Confused over the hues? Pantone breaks down the top colors designers are using in their new collections.
New York Fashion Week is well underway at the tents at Lincoln Center — and we’re completely in love with the rich hues dominating the collections of designers like Tracy Reese and Christian Siriano.
And now, the color experts at Pantone have just released the fashion color report for spring 2014 to give us a closer glimpse of what we’ll be wearing in a few months. The official colors — Placid Blue, Violet Tulip, Paloma, Hemlock, Sand, Freesia, Cayenne, Celosia Orange, Dazzling Blue and Radiant Orchid — are all about showing off personality and individuality, according to Pantone.
“This season, consumers are looking for a state of thoughtful, emotional and artistic equilibrium,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said in a statement. “While this need for stability is reflected in the composition of the palette, the inherent versatility of the individual colors allows for experimentation with new looks and color combinations.”
Each designer is taking his or her own spin on the popular colors with spring.
Tracy Reese
Tracy Reese — one of Michelle Obama‘s favorite designers — is using the rich reds and blues, like Cayenne and Dazzling Blue, in her spring 2014 designs.
“I love Cyan Blue mixed with Scarlet,” she said of what works for spring 2014. “It’s classic and always works. Mint Green is mixing beautifully with Lapis Blue and is a wonderful accent to a primary palette. I also like Ochre mixed with all shades of Pink from dusty to shocking.”
Her must have fashion item for 2014? “A tropical-print slip dress in a moody Pink floral print,” she said.
Tadashi Shoji
Tadashi Shoji is all the soft, feminine color for spring 2014. Colors like Violet Tulip communicate “the femininity and strength of a woman; a feminine liberation,” he said.
But, don’t forget about white. “White is the most important color for spring 2014. I pair it with almost every color in this collection,” he added.
Christian Siriano
Christian Siriano says spring 2014 style is “all about mixing prints and colors/textures together.”
Vibrant hues, like Cayenne, are part of the collection inspired by “a recent trip to Mexico’s Isla Mujeres: the ‘Island of Women.’ I took influence from the shapes and imagery of grass-lined huts, picturesque color-blocked residential streets, stonework and the locally abundant dahlia,” he said. “There are day separates in vibrant Poppy Red and Blazing Yellow floral prints paired with raffia textiles and soft elegant organza for evening in Sand tones. The collection, like the island, is dramatic, powerful, bright, romantic and light.”
