Copy Katy Perry’s milkmaid braids

Love braids? So do we. The simple style looks amazing on every type of hair and is easy to do. Want to switch up your braided style? Try Katy Perry‘s milkmaid braids.

Katy Perry gave us ’90s boho realness last week, when she sported some milkmaid braids during a recent appearance on Good Morning America. We thought it was just another look from the “Roar” singer, but it turns out milkmaids are back in a big way. Rebecca Minkoff used the same hairstyle to show off her spring/summer 2014 look during New York Fashion Week.

The style is an easy way to give your braids a boho edge — and it’s incredibly easy to do at home. We asked Fernando Salas, creator of White Sands Hair Products, to show us just how quickly we can channel Perry’s style.

“To re-create a milkmaid braid, begin with dry, straight hair as a base,” Salas told SheKnows. “To ensure shine and to de-frizz for that mirrorlike shine Katy has, opt to treat hair with a few pumps of White Sands Orchids Oil and work from roots to tips.”

Next, part hair in the middle and make two large sections similar to pigtails — leave them free, but parted.

Tip: You can use your fingers to loosen up the braids for different finishes.

“Starting on the right side of the part near your hairline, French-braid your tresses until you reach the back and secure with an elastic band. Repeat on the other side,” Salas continued. “Wrap the ends of these ‘pigtailed’ French braids around the base of your head, also making sure to loop them up and over one another.”

Bobby pins are key here, so use as many as you like to secure the braids in place.

“Voilà! Seal the this style with a shine-enhancing, flexible-hold hairspray like White Sands Infinity to keep it in place while also misting on your palms to help smooth flyaways down,” Salas added.
