Decorating your kitchen can be exciting, challenging and expensive. Paint or wallpaper? Hang a chandelier or install track lighting? Add a trendy tile backsplash? Before you make any big decisions, check out our experts’ tips on seasonal kitchen decorating.
Before you jump headfirst into a kitchen renovation, check out some helpful tips and tricks from people who decorate for a living. Seasonal trends can add a fresh, new spin to even the drabbest (and smallest) of kitchens, as long as you don’t overdo it and you keep these important factors in mind.
Keep your personality in mind
Although Pinterest is a godsend when it comes to home decorating, it can also be a nightmare. Don’t get caught up in wishing for someone else’s perfect kitchen. Instead, work to make your own kitchen perfect for you!
According to home designer Amy Hase, “Rooms are albums that provoke memories. What you decorate with should remind you of a street you wandered down or an experience that made you happy.”
When picking seasonal kitchen trends like country chic accessories or chalkboard walls, pick ones that evoke a memory for you and that reflect your personality. You’re the one who is going to have to look at it every day, after all.
Choose versatile color palettes
Painting is a major commitment and can dramatically change the feel of the space you’re in. Since the kitchen is the heart of the home, you want to pick a color that suits it (and your family’s style) and that can take you from season to season. Pick colors that are trendy now but that can also take you into next season. Right now, rich, opulent colors like gold and bronze are in, so paint with one of those. For spring and summer, you can brighten your kitchen with fun accessories like artwork, curtains and drapes.
New York designer Robin Bell suggests picking a color that isn’t the boldest and brightest in the deck.
“The perfect wall color is seldom the prettiest shade in the fan deck. Give that slightly drab stepsister shade a go — it’ll be far more interesting.”
If you’re not completely committed to a full wall, choose a smaller portion of wall to paint as an accent. This will not only add a focal point to showcase your favorite accessories, but it will be easy to update and accessorize with the changing seasons.
Use accessories and lighting
Lighting can completely change the look, feel and size of a room without costing an arm and a leg. If you’re blessed with big windows and a lot of natural light, keep the window treatments minimal. Accessorize your natural light by adding colorful shades, valences or drapes. During the winter months, when it gets darker earlier, string some plain white lights around the window to give the illusion of more light.
If you have to use track or recessed lighting, designer Anthony Baratta suggests using it minimally.
“Use recessed lighting sparingly. Too many fixtures can turn your ceiling into Swiss cheese!”
When it comes to displaying seasonal accessories, you want to be mindful of the damage. Since you’ll be swapping out mirrors, artwork, wreaths and drapes frequently, you’ll want to find methods that won’t completely destroy your walls.
Melissa Michaels, author and owner of The Inspired Room, suggests leaning mirrors and artwork to avoid nail holes.
“Now, I lean almost as much as I actually hang! I lean things on the back of bookshelves, tabletops, mantels, windowsills, floors and stair landings. No walls are damaged or need to be fixed if you make a mistake.”
Plus, this makes it easier to decorate at will.
