During this time of year, my fellow ModStylists and I get tons of questions about how to stay warm without sacrificing style. The key is investing in pieces that are both fashionable and functional — think hoods, hats and handbags. Think colors, layers and prints! Here, I’ve outlined some tips that can make your autumn outfitting experience all the more appealing.
The rules of thumb
- Colors: Go for rich, warm colors. Burgundy and mustard are great ones to start with, especially for layering pieces such as cardigans.
- Layers: Take your fave pieces from spring or summer and mix them into your fall wardrobe. That basic cami will pair perfectly beneath roomy sweaters, and hair scarves can be worn around the neck.
- Prints: Never underestimate the power of the ‘three Ps’ — polka dots, plaid and paisley! These three prints add pop to any outfit, fall or not.
My current favorite fall looks
Sassy style
For a look that is warm and stylish with a little bit of edge, I chose this adorable cropped plaid top paired with a wine-hued midi skirt.
A cropped top with a modest-length skirt maintains a work-appropriate look that’s still youthful and fun!
I’ve added thick knee-high socks (for extra warmth), a mustard knit hat and chunky-heeled Oxford booties.
To take this look from day to night, toss in a sleek jacket and dark tights. Easy peasy!
Layered lady
For this look, I set the foundation with these amazing high-waisted jeans in the perfect wash and length. Instead of pairing them with a sweater, try that silky blouse you picked up over the spring or summer. Then, add a mustard scarf, an ombre wrap coat and a multi-colored handbag.
The key to looking cute while staying warm isn’t just layering — it’s about pairing vibrant colors, patterns and textures in exciting and wearable ways! Don’t forget to have some fun with it.
