Top 10 paint colors for nurseries

Green is the modern unisex color, says Bernie Brozek, president of Fresh Coat Painters. Plus, it’s a great neutral palette that matches well with natural elements and all wooden furniture, he says.

While pale pink is traditionally a feminine color for little girls, it can also transition and grow with a girl as she gets older.

“It’s also much more calming and attractive than bright or hot pink,” Brozek says.

Purple goes great mixed with pink for a more feminine touch. It’s also a representation of femininity without being overly girly, Brozek adds.

A lighter shade of purple, lavender is nice in nurseries as well. It complements many other colors, says Beverley Kruskol, a general contractor and owner of M.Y. Pacific Building, Inc.

“They can be made very soft and subtle, or they can be made very bohemian using lots of bright color splashes, such as throw pillows, bedding, pictures, murals and wall decals,” she says.

Pastel blue can be gender neutral because of its relaxing hue. It also looks great matched with dark blue and white strips — either painted on the walls or used in the nursery’s accessories.

Bold blues make the gender apparent and give a great pop of color to a room. The color also can grow with a boy into maturity. Try pairing bolder blues with a nautical theme, sea creatures or sports themes.

Bright or pastel yellows bring a sunny disposition to any room. Brozek adds that they go well in a room with a lot of natural light. Plus, yellow is gender neutral.

“This is a great neutral color that can add more color into a room with accents and accessories,” Brozek says. “This is also great for a room that might not always be a nursery.”

This range of colors works well when you do not want to overwhelm the room with femininity, Brozek says.

“Salmon was one of the biggest colors in the 2013 spring season and is a great option for a little girl’s nursery,” he says.

Though we’re always tempted to paint the walls in colors, leaving them white can be just as lovely, Kruskol says.

“White walls with soft murals are beautiful in a baby’s room,” she says.
