Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Kelly Rowland

I asked Emily Heser, lead stylist for Cutler Salon, how we can all recreate the look at home with our natural locks. Here’s what she had to say!

Get the look

Emily says: “This is a look that can be dressed up or down, and worn messy or neat. It’s a fun way to change up your look, and trick people into thinking you made a big chop!”

1. Set hair using a 1-1/4-inch curling iron. Try to create each curl in the same direction, away from the face, to get the flipped up look. Use Redken Shape 11 Finishing Thermal Spray to protect from the heat while styling.
2. Take a 1-inch section at the nape of your neck, and backcomb (tease) it quite a bit. This will create the cushion that will keep your bobby pins from closing out. Add a quick drying hairspray like Redken 18 to that section only.
3. Using a small clear elastic, pull the very ends of your hair into a loose ponytail (only the ends, the bottom 3 inches).
4. Hook a large bobby pin (2 if you have very thick or long hair) through the elastic, and roll the hair under, starting at the ends, making sure to keep the bobby pin(s) easily accessible.
5. Hook the bobby pin(s) into the backcombed padding that you created at the nape of your neck. Use French hair pins to pin any stray hairs up.
6. Adjust the shape to your liking, keeping in mind that if you have shorter layers or bangs around the face, it looks great to let them hang loosely around your face. Be generous with a light hold hairspray like Redken Fashion Work 12!
