These Health Retreats Are the Place to Be When You Need a Little R&R

We’ve kinda come to equate vacations with boozing it up on the beach — which is totally enjoyable and relaxing in the moment. But when we return from our alcohol-soaked getaways, a lot of the time we don’t exactly feel well-rested. In fact, it usually almost feels like we need a vacation to recover from our vacation.

But if you head to a health retreat resort, you get all the decadence of a relaxing vacay plus a detox that helps you feel fit (and minus the 7 day hangover). We’ve rounded up some of our favorite healthy destinations on the United States. Start your research now!

1. Copperhood Retreat and Spa, New York

“Detoxification is an important rejuvenating process in health maintenance. It is a time when we allow our cells and organs to breathe out, and restore themselves,” say the experts at Copperhood Retreat and Spa, where you can go on a detoxifying juicing or raw-food fast in an elegant boutique retreat setting nestled in Shandaken, New York, in the Catskill Mountains.

The description of the spa’s detox program explains: “Our juice fasting plan is the fastest and healthiest approach to detoxing and as a benefit of the process a significant weight loss. The results are swift and visible. Juicing is also wonderfully effective in breaking food and substance addictions such as caffeine, sugar, alcohol, cigarettes and other bad habits.”

2. Canyon Ranch Miami Beach Hotel and Spa, Arizona

Recharge at Canyon Ranch Miami Beach Hotel and Spa in Tuscon, Arizona. The resort’s “7 Days to Change” immerses you in a program that promises to impact your life forever. Exercise, massage and meditation help you get in touch with yourself and make long-term changes. It’s a little bit more of a spiritual detox than a traditional detox program, though they do touch on nutrition as well. They offer seven different specialty experiences, from mindfulness to weight loss.

3. The Oaks at Ojai, California

Located in the quaint town of Ojai, California, The Oaks at Ojai is a scenic 90-minute drive from Los Angeles. Founded by wellness pioneer Sheila Cluff, The Oaks has 46 rooms and is ideal for women who want to spend a few days eating healthfully and exercising in a homey environment. “Lose stress, gain peace of mind,” is their mantra, and they cater to the over-40 crowd.

4. Spa Internazionale at Fisher Island Club, Florida

Escape the party lifestyle of South Beach at the spa at Fisher Island Club in Miami. It’s pretty secluded, and you’ll take a seven-minute ferry ride across Biscayne Bay to reach the island resort. You can stay in a historic cottage, courtyard villa, or guest house suite during your visit and book spa treatments that range from massage to exfoliation and facials. You’ll enjoy a wide range of classes from yoga to cross fit, cardio to Pilates, dance, spinning and more. Not to mention the fact that holistic life coaching, a gyrotonic studio and nutritionists are at your service.

5. Red Mountain Resort, Utah

Red Mountain Resort in beautiful Ivins, Utah offers a whole grip of retreats that range from girlfriends getaways to weight-loss experiences, but our favorite is the 4-day, 3-night Self Care Essential Retreat. This is a whole lot more than a juice detox, this is a total mind/body detox program. Included in your package (which costs $1699 per person) is a Himalayan salt stone massage, vibrational sound therapy, cranial sacral therapy and table Thai yoga massage. We feel clearer just thinking about it.
