Exterior home colors are expected to go back to the basics in 2014. We anticipate seeing a lot of white and cream exteriors, desert stucco and the lovely red brick. Many builders are seeing the simplistic trends of the past make their way back into the new year with fewer cookie-cutter homes and more individual and simplistic styles.
Another exterior home trend in 2014 is staying true to your home’s architectural style and location on the map. Many homeowners spend a lot of time and effort choosing the location of their home and want their house to reflect that pride and ownership. Northeast Victorians are most likely to be painted in Americana colors, while Midwestern farmhouses and suburban homes are going to be tinted in grays and creams. Coastal and Southwestern homes are going to stay on track with their traditional beachy and desert hues.

The largest trend in home paint colors for the exterior and interior of the home is hues that are in the coastal family. As a matter of fact, Benjamin Moore announced their 2014 paint color of the year as “a breath of fresh air,” a light, beachy blue that they are referring to as “the new neutral.” Expect to see this color hit home trims as well as other teals and sky blues, seafoam greens, sandy beiges and concrete grays, all hues that can look neutral yet modern.
On the flip side, we should also expect many trims to be coated with a darker statement color. Think dark red with lighter blue homes, deep grays with cream-colored houses and white with darker exteriors. Anything to bring in a dramatic contrast between the trim and the exterior will be favored.

Thanks to Pinterest and home bloggers, 2014 will be the year of the statement door. To reflect personal style and pizzazz, home owners are turning to their front doors for inspiration. Painting them in deep shades of red, bright and fun blues, and sleek and modern blacks, the statement door is a great and easy way to update the exterior of the home without spending too much cash.
Side note
Before sprucing up the exterior of your home with the use of paint, be sure to check with your homeowners association, if you have one, for rules and regulations that may prevent the use of fun colors on the outside of your house.
