Return to the gilded age
Play with mercury glass
How about changing out your normal oil bottles for a while with something a little more sparkly? Mercury glass bottles make excellent holders for EVOO, vinegar and the like. Not sure how safe it is? Sit the empty bottles out in place of your regular bottle, but keep pulling the old supply from the cabinet. (Wayfair, $59)
Shiny canisters
Carry the mercury glass theme farther down the countertop with a set of new canisters to hold your flour, powdered sugar or sugar. This massive set has enough parts to hold coffee and even powdered creamer (if that’s your thing). (Wayfair, $103)
Sparkly shakers
Another quick change-out is your salt and pepper shakers. If your holiday shakers just have snowflakes, you can leave them out all winter. Or you can track down a shiny option to add a little more sparkle to your winter seasoning. (HSN, $30)
Reflect on summer gardens
Just because cold has turned your grass brown doesn’t mean you can’t keep your countertops lively with an herb garden in a couple of gilded planters or some fresh-cut flowers in a mirrored vase. (Save-on-Crafts.com, $15-20)
