It’s so much fun changing your decor with the seasons, but changing your entire home color scheme every season isn’t often feasible. Here are a few fun winter colors that experts say will be perfect all year long.
Grace Machado McClurg, design director of Puccini Group, said that metallic gold is the perfect winter color to incorporate into your home this year.
“Metallic throw pillows (Pier 1, $30) are a relatively inexpensive way to transform the face of your furniture without re-upholstering or buying new pieces. This option also significantly transforms the mood of a space from season to season. Combine metallic colors with winter white to introduce a brightness to your home during a traditionally dark season.
Swapping out your tableware or accessories for the above service ware items (Esselle, $23) can bring a sparkle to your table. Whether it is a gold-glazed serving dish, metallic candle holder, vase or cutlery, introducing seasonal tableware can quickly transform your dining room.
Replace some of your basic picture frames with metallic frames (Pottery Barn, $24) at winter time to bring new life to your photo displays. This can easily — and inexpensively — change the entire look of your décor without taking additional space on the shelves and/or walls.”
Tracie Stoll from Cleverly Inspired suggested that a muted blue like in these beautiful curtains (Anthropologie, $108), this amazing end table (West Elm, $80) and these decorative boxes (Jayson Home, $139) can be a beautiful way to add color to your home all year long.
“I find that mixing in a muted blue in the winter is effortless because it plays nicely with so many other colors. Folks think of it as a summer color, but I feel when you place it with muted beiges and creams it can be very cozy and clean for winter time. Pantone color Moroccan Blue, available in samples at Lowe’s, is a great one to try.”
Emily Meyer of Tea Collection thinks that citron green is perfect way to add a pop of color into your home. Adding a pop of color in the form of a pretty decorative pillow (Clayton Gray Home, $90) or a stunning bowl (Arteriors Home, $210) is a simple yet beautiful way to add brightness to your home.
“I love how citron is a breath of sunshine on cold gray days. Every home needs a treasure from global travels. I love these blankets from South America! (L’aviva Home, $485)”
Catie Parrish, chief homemaker at Wayfair’s Idea Lounge, likes Pantone’s color of the year and thinks that Radiant Orchid is a great way to brighten up your winter decor. She recommends adding items like this modern clock (Wayfair, $49), this fun rug (Wayfair, $34-$78) or this amazing pouf (Wayfair, $177) to add a touch of orchid to your decor without feeling overwhelming.
“Pantone’s 2014 color of the year, Radiant Orchid, is a particularly bold and happy color. Some people consider purple to be a polarizing color, but it’s actually extremely versatile with broadly appealing shades on both ends of the spectrum. If you love the rich tones of plum or aubergine, you’ll love Radiant Orchid. It has the same intensity and elegance, but with a contemporary twist.”
Vidya Sukumaran from What’s Ur Home Story loves the idea of incorporating paprika red into her home decor this winter.
“Come winter, when the trees are bare, grass is brown, Mother Nature is devoid of her usual warmth, I tend to reach for colors that add warmth to my home. This season, my favorite is paprika, PANTONE SMART 17-1553X. You too can incorporate this beautiful color into your home through these accessories.
This Crossroads Wool Dhurrie Rug (West Elm, $45-$550) sporting fun maze-like motifs instantly adds a splash of color as well as texture. In winter months especially, layering your home with different textural elements is key to amping up the warmth and coziness of your home. On the same note, this pure jute High Wheel Pillow Cover (Pottery Barn, $30) is perfect to add to your pillow collection on the couch. If you are afraid of adding such a strong color in large doses, start small like adding this Tick-Tock Clock (Anthropologie, $24) to your nightstand or desk.”
Allison Fannin of Two Thirty-Five Designs is a fan of incorporating white into her home decor to give it a fresh look in winter or any time of year.
“Some say white is the absence of color and want to brush it off as an option in design. I view it as a clean, fresh option to brighten the mood and get a renewed sense of space, especially in the winter.
I have been crushing hard on Pantone Bright White (11-0601) and find myself drawn to this. And now even more so, when we tend to be indoors more than any other time of year. I need to feel an openness in my spaces, and this does the trick.
I have a couple of these chairs (Design Within Reach, $519) floating around and absolutely love them. They fill my spaces (I am always rotating them) perfectly. What better way to make a huge impression in your little’s room while keeping clean lines and a simple design than with a beautiful crib (Layla Grayce, $749). This tufted bench (Target, $100) is a great, reasonable statement piece that can be put just about anywhere and blend in well without overpowering any area.”
