10 Tops that scream fashionista

Even the most fashion-forward woman knows it’s hard to keep up with the latest trends every season. Here’s a cheat sheet of the 10 tops that will keep you stylish at all times.

1

Floral T-shirt

Sure, a plain white V-neck will go far in a wardrobe, but one that really stands out and matches with just about anything is a floral tee. Whether a tiny paisley print or furiously wild tropical floral, a print enlivens a simple outfit. To avoid looking like you just came home from a vacation in Hawaii, skip the collared button down and pick prints in flattering shades. (Zara, $20)

2

Chambray

This might just be the most versatile top invented. In the winter and fall it can layer under oversized sweaters or vests, and in the spring and summer it can tuck into full skirts or act as a cover-up for windy days on the beach. Needless to say, I don’t think there’s ever a bad time to wear a chambray. (Gap, $60)

3

Graphic tees

(H&M, $15)

(Zara, $8)

(Zara, $50)

When Alexander Wang put the Parental Advisory Explicit Content label on his sweatshirts in his Spring 2014 show and the internet blew up with positive reactions, it’s a sign that the weirder the T-shirt, the more attention it will get. Be a fashion daredevil and show off your witty side by sporting catchy phrases, interesting art and all-around puzzling pics on your tees.

4

Boatneck striped tee

(H&M, $10)

Nothing is more chic than a navy or black striped 3/4-length sleeve shirt. It’s Parisian chic, nautical cool and involves minimal styling. It’s the no brainer that looks stylish no matter what.
5

White silk blouse

A white silk blouse can be worn to the office with a suit or with jeans and heels. It’s that perfect in-between shirt that can make a casual outfit look dressy and a dressy outfit feel comfortable. It’s a win-win! (Anthropologie, $128)

6

Peplum

The peplum top made a huge commotion a few seasons back, but it’s still as popular as ever. Stay stylish and make sure your closet has at least one sleek — and ultra-flattering — peplum. (H&M, $30)

7

Button-down cotton shirt

A button down might be a pretty conventional shirt, but it’s actually one a fashionista can stand out in. It works on its own tucked into trousers or skinny jeans or layered under sweaters and cardigans. (Ann Taylor, $70)

8

Flannel

This is a shirt that might evoke memories of ’90s grunge, but forget the years of shirts you wore three sizes too big and embrace the latest — and more form-fitting — version. (Madewell, $75)

9

Turtleneck

OK, so the word turtleneck might evoke painful images of twin sweater sets with holiday snowmen and gingerbread men, but there is a fashionable aspect to turtlenecks that only true fashionistas know how to pull off. If you stick to solid colors in black, white, gray or tan, it lends itself to style seamlessly under chic ensembles. For a casual weekend, a turtleneck and jeans is perfect with a puffy down vest or seriously eye-catching jewels. (Saks Fifth Avenue, $55)

10

Fisherman sweater

This probably seems like an unfashionable top to include in this list, but there are so many elegant ways to style it. Layer it over a chambray or collared shirt and pair it with a flared skirt for a classic look, or style it with leather pants and a pair of Converses for an edgier approach. (ASOS, $34)

11

Crop top

If you’re up for exposing some midriff, a crop top is something you’ll want to try out. Pair it with a high-waisted skirt or pant for a more lady-like look. (H&M, $30)
