Stay in a hostel
The thought of staying in a hostel may freak you out a little bit, but it’s a travel adventure you simply must try. You’ll stay in a room with several other travelers at night, and take your belongings with you by day. A hostel allows you to save a ton of money while meeting interesting people from around the world. Just do your research first to make sure you pick a clean and safe place to lay your head at night.
See the world by train
Unlike the United States’ hodgepodge of commuter rails, other countries and continents have extremely well-integrated and efficient train systems. If you head to Europe, for instance, pick up a Eurail pass so you can hop to and from cities and countries for just a fraction of what it would cost to purchase plane fares. (The sightseeing is pretty spectacular, too!)
Backpack into the great beyond
The United States has some of the most pristine and beautiful chunks of wilderness in the world. Take advantage of gorgeous America by planning a backpacking trip through one of our country’s national parks. You’ll be able to see nature up close and personal while unplugging from the daily grind.
Road trip through the wilderness
If backpacking isn’t your gig, consider taking a road trip through America’s frontiers. Pick a location that’s a good distance from your hometown and take off driving. You’ll be amazed by how much more you’ll see when you travel by car rather than plane.
Go tubing
A tubing trip has all the charm of a kayaking or canoeing trip, without the hassle of having to get out of the water to go to the bathroom (just kidding!). Seriously, though, a relaxing float down the river with a beer in hand is all you need to unwind from your stress. You can make it a day trip or stay for several days by utilizing local cabins or campgrounds.
Walk through an unknown city
One of the best ways to enjoy the rich culture of a destination city is explore it on foot. On the morning of your first day of vacation, set out with a map in hand and just start walking without a plan in mind. You’ll see all kinds of restaurants, bars and sights that you’d otherwise miss if you just look at a city guide.
Take off on a solo trip
There’s nothing like experiencing the culture of a city as a solo woman. Pick a destination and make plans to sightsee, enjoy restaurants and stay in a luxury hotel for a relaxing retreat. Just make sure you’re practicing safety and have an emergency plan should something go wrong.
Go camping with your besties
Finally, make plans for a camping trip with your best girlfriends. It’s better if guys aren’t invited! You’ll bond as you figure out how to pitch a tent and grill burgers over an open flame.
