5 Spring cleaning musts that you can DIY

Spring is in the air, and that means it’s time to deep clean the house. Cast off your fear of the hard stuff. With a little help from the pros, you can DIY yourself to a happy house.

Instead of spending money on cleaning service, check out these easy ways to deep clean dusty drapes on your own. If curtains are machine-washable, put them on a cold gentle cycle and then dry them on delicate. Take them out before they are completely dry and hang them back up to finish. If yours are not machine-washable, you have the option to steam clean, wipe them down with a damp cloth or use a lint roller to collect the dust.

Washing windows can seem tricky if you are using the old spray-and-wipe method. Instead, take some tips from the pros and invest in a professional-style scrubber and squeegee combination tool ($12) and a microfiber cloth. Watch a few tutorials and go for it. It really is easier than you might think to get streak-free windows. Simply dunk your scrubber in warm soapy water, wet the window and then squeegee in a horizontal pattern. Once you finish the window, wipe the excess water from the edges with your cloth and you are done. Your windows will be clean and streak-free.

Go for wife-of-the-year in 2014 and try your hand at cleaning your gutters yourself. Put on your gloves, dust mask and safety glasses and check out the instructional from Bob Vila. Start by scooping the gunk into a garbage bag. Then, when most of the debris has been removed, carefully spray out the gutter (spraying toward the downspout) with a super nozzle, like this one (Home Depot, $11).
