Fake flower arrangements
Sorry, you’re really not fooling anyone with that silk flower arrangement. It’s better to either replace fake flowers with real bouquets or just not display any flowers at all. If you can’t afford a fresh bouquet every week, display potted flowers instead for a long-lasting pop of color.
Too much matching
Decorative items should complement each other rather than completely match. For example, a room with purple accents should not have only one color of purple represented in the space. Instead, use a mix of violet, plum and purple-gray for a room that flows together without being overpowering. Too much matching is easily fixed by swapping out throw pillows, vases and rugs.
Toilet rugs of any kind
Bathrooms definitely need area rugs to avoid slipping, but please don’t adorn your commode with carpeting. Ditch the puzzle-shaped toilet rug and matching lid cover and replace it with a rectangular, no-slip bathroom carpet.
Pattern overload
Patterns are great, as long as they’re used appropriately. A pattern should provide visual interest without carrying the room. For instance, if your pillows, rug and curtains are the same pattern, you need to remove at least one of these items and replace it with another in different a pattern or a solid color.
Awkward area-rug placement
Area rugs can complete the layout of a room or make it feel slightly awkward. It’s all about placement. Make sure that your area rug is “anchored” to a piece of furniture rather than freely floating on your tile or hardwood.
Furniture pushed against walls
It may seem counterintuitive, but your room will feel both larger and cozier if you pull your sofas and tables away from the walls. The only piece of furniture that you should smash against a wall is a bookshelf.
