Challenge: make something creative
Why? Researchers Ebersole and Hess say expressing yourself creatively can create balance and order, give a sense of control and help to clarify your thoughts and feelings.
Margaret: Since making the leap into the freelance writing life, my personal creative projects totally went on the back burner. So for this challenge, I took a break from my paid projects and focused on a story idea I had floating in my head for a while. I put on some music, got my notebook and just let my mind wander. For the first time in a long time I felt so excited, jotting down ideas for a story line like a happy crazy person. The creativity just came pouring out and it felt amazing.
Bouvier: Because of my long list of DIY projects, it was hard for me to choose one thing to create for this challenge. After thinking long and hard, I decided to create an adventure book for my husband and me, inspired by the movie Up. It would have been much easier to have some website create an album, but there’s something special about printed photos that captures the essence of the moment, and I truly wanted to make it ours. From all of our travels to life’s biggest moments it has all been an adventure, and I’m looking forward to many more.
Victoria: It was another beautiful Saturday in New York, and the warm weather was making me really appreciate the city. After a good workout and productive day of errands, I wanted to do something nice just for me. Usually I’d reward myself with a dessert, but I’m trying to cut back on sweets and decided to do something a little different: make a spring bouquet. I’ve probably bought myself flowers a handful of times, but never a custom bouquet. I decided to go with a pink theme and it came out just lovely.
Danielle: I tapped into the artistic right side of my brain for this challenge and decided to put my pen to paper and do some creative writing. Throughout my schooling, I have always been complimented on my writing style and very much enjoyed crafting stories. Recently, I have plenty of fodder to do so since stepping out into the public arena and speaking about dating and sexuality for people with physical disabilities, winning the title of Ms. Wheelchair New York 2012 and then “walking” the runway in New York Fashion Week. My fans and many others have queried as to whether I will write a book and I used this challenge to kick-start my desire to do so.
