Put some sizzle into your Father’s Day card this year by making and mailing a T-bone steak. Grilled to postal perfection, it’s sure to “meat” Dad’s approval and bring a smile to his face when he finds it in the mailbox. All you need are a few simple craft supplies and less than $3.00 in stamps to mail.
Supplies:
- 8 x 10-inch piece of 1-inch upholstery foam (found at most craft and hobby stores)
- Steak printout on cardstock (Download PDF here.)
- 8 x 10-inch piece of thin, brown cardboard
- Spray adhesive
- Scissors
- X-Acto knife or utility blade
- Brown spray paint or rust primer
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Cream/tan acrylic paint
Instructions:
1. Print out the steak image on 8.5 x 11-inch cardstock paper. (Download PDF here.)
2. Cut out the steak image with scissors.
3. Trace the steak shape onto the upholstery foam and cardboard.
4. Cut out the steak shape from the upholstery foam using an X-Acto knife or utility blade. Cut out the steak shape from the cardboard with scissors.
5. To make the “fatty edge” of the steak, apply hot glue around the outside of the foam steak in small sections.
6. Slightly smooth out the “fatty edge” sections with a piece of cardboard. Allow the hot glue to cool and dry.
7. Spray paint the “fatty edge” of the foam steak with brown spray paint or rust primer.
8. Apply spray adhesive to the backs of the steak image and steak cardboard shape. Attach these to the top and bottom of the foam steak.
9. Paint the top of the T-bone area with cream or tan acrylic paint to match the steak image. Allow it to dry.
10. Write your message and mailing address on the cardboard postcard side, leaving room at the top for stamps. (My steak mailed for $2.32, but it’s always good to have it weighed at the post office just to make sure.)
