Colorful dishware to replace your thrift shop finds

Tired of drab dinners? Perhaps it’s time to update your tableware. No matter what kind of design aesthetic you have, we’ve got a few choices for you.

If you’re a perky girl with a love for colors…

We should be best friends. Also, we have just the dishes for you. First, we highly recommend picking a favorite color or two (this might be hard, we understand) and getting some awesome solid pieces from Fiestaware (Macys, $56). Then you can mix and match with bright patterned options, like this fresh, bold flowered set with a modern twist (Macys, $50). Or layer them with these cool, feisty Italian-esque dishes (Macys, $33).

If you’re a little more “Bohemian”…

You’ll love this whimsical take on dandelions that looks like something straight out of a C.S. Lewis novel (Anthropologie, $12-18). To keep the whimsy alive, try some cheeky animal dessert plates with their own vintage feel in contrasting or similar colors (Anthropologie, $18). Or you can show off your hippie side with these melamine options that go full-on “flower power” mode (Pier 1, $6). Try mixing them in with this pretty medallion design to add a touch of grown-up color (Target, $32). Love color but want something a little less bold? These funky square dishes quietly say, “Yeah, I’ve probably been to more exotic locations than you. No big deal” (Sears, $80).

If you’re a modern girl…

You probably prefer clean lines, more structured florals and classic prints that have been updated in modern colors, right? Get your floral on while still practicing restraint with this fresh collection (Target, $35). Or try a fresh, trendy color scheme on a time-honored pattern tradition: Lime green damask, anyone (Pier 1, $7)? Go truly modern with the clean-lined stripes on this set (Target, $20). We also love this arts-and-crafts-inspired set with lines, dots and cool beach blues (West Elm, $5-8). All of these sets, however, are at their best when you mix them with the Fiestaware from the top or this massive square-shaped set that comes in an array of colors (Walmart, $70).

If you’re a traditional girl in a modern world…

We’re here to give you hope. There are still plenty of options available for ladies who want to keep with the traditional look of their home or just love the “shabby chic” approach. For instance, these Blue Willow dishes look just like the ones in our Mamaw’s old farm house (Walmart, $55). For another Dutch-ish throwback, these Corelle dishes with an unbreakable chain of pink and red daisies are downright sweet (Walmart, $27). Or go truly tea rose traditional with this gorgeous set of china (Dillards, $7-53) or these sweet pink dishes (Sears, $172). Just… maybe don’t use it on the kids’ table.

If you’re little bit modern and a little bit traditional…

Try an updated spin on these traditional classics. One way to go is these vintage-looking muted medallions that seem inspired by the patterns of the Pennsylvania Dutch (Target, $35). Layer them on top of this pretty patterned set (Target, $80). Or try these bold, water-colored flower options (Target, $40) as the perfect summer picnic set or for a pop of fun with something more plain, like this set of simple but colorful dishes (Walmart, $27) for an extra modern touch. Or maybe a burnt red trellis pattern is more your game (Sears, $111).

With the trendiness of vintage patterns and our penchant for bright colors, there’s never been a better time to go dish shopping. There’s really no wrong way to mix any of these sets to make them perfectly suited to whatever kind of girl you choose to be this week. Mix your animals with your tea roses or your Greek keys with your daisies. As long as the colors coordinate, dinner is sure to be, well, a smash.
