We asked interior designer Ashley Phipps from Simply Designing: What paint colors should be used to complement black furniture?
Q: I have all black furniture and I’m worried my room feels too dark. What colors can I paint my walls to lighten up the space? Is there anything else I can do?
A: That’s a great question, and one that has more than one right answer depending on your personal preference. But when designing and decorating a room, I love to have a bit of variety in my space to add contrast and visual interest. Dark colors will ground a space and create a sense of intimacy while light colors will help a room feel larger than it is. Rooms that are too dark or too light often feel uncomfortable and unsettling. So my suggestion is to always incorporate both dark, bright and light colors into each room.
Because black furniture is visually very heavy, it is important to be sure to add light and bright colors to your space. Painting the walls a light color will help your room feel beautiful and balanced. I like using colors like Arctic Blue, Soft Candlelight or Mint Shake to give a lovely airy and feminine touch to a room that has all black furniture in it.
Then I would recommend adding light and bright colored accent pieces like pillows, decor and art throughout the room to help incorporate a variety of light, bright and dark colors into the space. Colors such as Dove White, Regal Purple or True Turquoise make beautiful accents in almost any space, especially rooms that have darker furniture.
Finally, just because all of your furniture is currently black does not mean that you can’t add a piece of wood-toned furniture or even a bright or light piece of furniture into the space. In this case, I would avoid another dark-colored piece as it might simply appear to clash with your existing furniture. Instead, find a piece of furniture that is either a light tone or brightly colored, or even metallic to add a pop of whimsy and fun to the space.
