Crafting for Father’s Day is a bit outside the box for me. I tend to run on the girly, pink side of things over on A Bubbly Life, and my husband has enough glitter on his clothes from my projects to know that he does not need anything else glitter in his life.
However, I love a challenge, and leather is the up-and-coming trend in the craft world. Leather may stray far from my roots of pink sequins, but I think rustic leather makes the perfect craft item to work with and create a special frame for Dad.
While leather can be an expensive item to use for crafting, do not worry if you are budget conscious. I picked up a leather belt and a picture frame at the thrift store to create the leather-engraved frame for only $5. Belts and frames come in a variety of sizes, so measure both to ensure the leather belt will cover the frame.
Supplies:
- Leather belt
- Picture frame
- Shears or razor blade
- High-strength glue (example: Liquid Nails)
- Clamp
- Pen
- Wood burning tool
Instructions:
Trim the belt buckle part from the belt and discard.
Line up belt to frame and cut according to length needed. Repeat until four sides are cut.
Glue belt to frame and clamp. Let dry for a few hours or overnight. (I like to be extra careful and make sure it sticks.)
Write your message to Dad with your pen onto the leather belt. (I used stencils because I have the handwriting of a doctor, but I encourage you to use your own handwriting; everyone loves the handmade touch.)
Using your written message as a guide, trace over with the wood burning tool and your frame is engraved.
If you would like to test the color first, use the tool on the leftover pieces of belt. Another option for engraving is to use a leather stamping kit.
For the final touch, add a favorite photo of your little(s) — the most important part.
Happy Father’s Day!
