Believe it or not, we don’t want to be known for every trend we follow. Some fashiontrends, in fact, are better when followed on the down-low.
1. Fake glasses
Once stigmatized, glasses have become a major style statement these days. So much so, in fact, that some of us who aren’t vision-impaired want in on the fun. And there’s good news. Clear glasses, or glasses without lenses/with blank lenses, are easier to find than ever before. If you’re looking for a style update, consider some dark frames like these quirky round ones. Who knew that eventually being called “four-eyes” would be a compliment (Bleudame.com, $12).
2. Pants that are basically pajamas
Ugh, pants. Shopping for them can be really tough, and often the ones that look good aren’t all that comfy. Enter the pajama-pant trend. While some styles are obviously modeled after sleepwear, there are plenty of subtle versions that are just as comfortable without making such a bold style statement. For example, these gems from Zara are chic black trousers with a slightly loose fit. Definitely work-appropriate, right? But they have an elastic waist so that you feel like you’re lounging at home in front of the TV even when you’re really at a business lunch (Zara, $70).
3. Ear cuffs
I bought my first ear cuff at Claire’s in the late ’90s (it was a climbing man that crawled up my cartilage) and was thrilled when they got high-fashion approval in 2013. If you want the look of an adventurous ear piercing without, well, the pain, cuffs are for you. There are tons of realistic styles available on Etsy, like this tragus cuff (Etsy.com, $4).
4. High-fashion sweatshirt
Like their pajama-pant counterparts, sweatshirts are in right now. It might feel like cheating to go out in the same clothes you like to bum around in, but retailers have got you covered with sweatshirts that are so chic you won’t feel guilty for rocking them at the office or even on a date. Take this style, with contrasting sleeves and a jeweled collar fit for royalty — certainly a far distant cousin of the gray, toothpaste-stained sweatshirt you fall asleep in every night (Asos.com, $476).
5. Temporary tattoos
I love the look of some well-done ink, but I’m afraid of commitment. Are you similar? Luckily, fake tattoos have gotten glam. Tattly is a fantastic temporary tattoo company that sells inexpensive designs drawn by real artists. If you have the itch to get fake-inked, might I suggest this stunning peacock, which should last you about three to four days once it’s been applied (Tattly, $5).
6. Jeggings
Jeggings (or Treggings, as H&M calls them) were widely mocked when they first hit retail racks a few years ago, but the leggings-turned-pants have come a long way since their humble beginnings. You can actually get away with wearing them in public now, although I still strongly recommend covering your behind by wearing a longer top. Jeggings still don’t provide the coverage that real jeans do (H&M, $18).
