I love seeing pinwheels in July Fourth decor. Paper pinwheels don’t last very long, but these fabric ones will stay looking great year after year. And what’s more American than a white picket fence? The little crate ties the whole thing together to make an adorable Fourth of July decoration.
Festive fabric pinwheels for July Fourth
Supplies:
- pinwheel pattern (download here)
- cotton fabric
- HeatnBond UltraHold no-sew adhesive
- 1/4-inch wooden dowel cut into two 12-inch lengths and one 8-1/2-inch length
- straight pin
- 3 buttons
- jewelry wire
- small wooden box or crate
- acrylic paint
- foam block
- raffia
Instructions:
1. Cut a piece of HeatnBond slightly larger than the pinwheel pattern. Then cut 2 pieces of fabric slightly larger than the HeatnBond.
2. Iron the HeatnBond onto the back of one piece of fabric and peel off the paper backing. (I recommend protecting your ironing board by covering it with a rag or cloth.)
3. Put the second piece of fabric on top, sandwiching the HeatnBond in between the two fabrics, and iron it down.
4. Use the pattern to cut out the pinwheel.
5. Thread a piece of jewelry wire through a button or bead.
6. Fold your pinwheel into shape by matching the dots on the pattern. Poke a straight pin through the center to make a small hole.
7. While holding the pinwheel together, remove the pin and thread one end of the jewelry wire through the hole. Make another hole with the pin and thread the other end of the jewelry wire through it.
8. Pull the button tight against the front of the pinwheel, and twist the ends of the wire together in the back.
9. Drill a small hole an inch from the top of a dowel and push the jewelry wire through it. Make a loop with the jewelry wire, then wrap it around itself to keep it from sliding back through the hole.
10. Repeat the process to make 3 pinwheels: 2 large and 1 small.
11. I put the pinwheels in this little picket fence crate that I picked up at the craft store. I just painted it white with some acrylic paint and then put a foam block in it. Push the pinwheels into the foam and then cover it with raffia.
I just love the bright, festive colors in my home for the Fourth of July!
