Here are some great ways to get teens involved in worthy causes during the holiday season.
t
t ‘Tis the season for hot chocolate (with mostly marshmallows, if you’re me), lights and ugly sweaters. It’s also a time that tends to weigh heavily on who got the best gift. This year, I challenge you to add some good old-fashioned social change to your holiday lists.
t
Start a jean drive for homeless teens in your community
t Teens across the country are donating their lightly worn jeans via Teens for Jeans at local Aeropostale stores. Why jeans? They are one of the top things teens ask for when they enter a homeless shelter. Plus, it’s a causey way to clean out those closets!
t
Save a life at your holiday party
t By hosting a spit party, you can add your friends, family and co-workers to the bone marrow registry. Its quick, easy and painless. We even had a match in our office that saved a 5-year-old boy.
t
Host a holiday-themed bake sale
t We know the bake sale is a staple. But how about spicing it up a bit by making it a competition? Or maybe do an exchange instead: 1 canned-good donation = 1 cookie. (After all, who doesn’t love a homemade chocolate chip cookie?)
t
Looking for an easy way to be eco-friendly?
t Cut back on all the wrapping paper this year and try something recycled. Old newspaper is a great option to save a tree and still savor the surprise.
t
Donate old phones to help victims of domestic violence
t We know the newest smartphones are at the top of the shopping list. Through Cell Phones for Survivors, you can donate old phones by hosting a drive in your community.
t
Put a donation to an organization in place of a gift on your wish list
t This is a great opportunity to research the causes and organizations you care about the most.
t
Want a really good New Year’s resolution?
t Skip that morning latte and contribute the money you would have spent on it to a charity of your choice.
