How to decorate with Pantone’s spring 2014 colors

Ready to get a jump on Pantone’s colors for 2014? Catie Parrish shares her picks to get your home ready for next year!

t If I were to describe the latest palette of Pantone’s hot colors in one word, it would be “balanced.” Take a look and you’ll see what I mean. There are soft pastels and vivid brights, cool hues and warm tones. What’s fantastic about this is that whatever colors you’re naturally drawn to (lately, for me, it’s green and orange), they have new twists on those hues for you to try. For example, if your blue is looking a little bored, give it a quick refresh by layering in some Placid Blue or Dazzling Blue.

t Here are a few combinations I’m dying to put together. (If your décor features any of these mixes, let me know. I’d love to see!)

t Color scheme No. 1: Hemlock, celosia orange and sand

t

t This is my favorite — a classic complementary color scheme created by pairing colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel. I combined green and orange with sand, Pantone’s “lightly toasted” neutral.

tCondo Sofa $1,599, Wayfair.com

tGideon lamp $480, Arteriors Home

tBlossom rug Safavieh

t

t Color scheme No. 2: Placid blue, violet tulip and radiant orchid

t

t I think this luxurious mix is just dying to be used as a bedroom color palette. It’s so peaceful because it’s an analogous color scheme, meaning the hues sit next to each other on the color wheel.

tSilk-tufted bedding Starts at $59, Pottery Barn

t Mystique lavender rug Starts at $90, Wayfair.com

t

t Chandelier $119.99, Macy’s

t

t Color scheme No. 3: Freesia, cayenne and dazzling blue

t

t Whoa! In your face, but oh-so perfect. This triad color scheme is made of up of three colors that form a triangle in the center of the color wheel (in this example, yellow, red, and blue). How awesome is this particular shade of poppy red?

tYellow Handmade Lampshade $224.61, Etsy

tHex pattern Starts at $78, Jill Rosenwald

tTextured Flower Pillow $120, Wayfair.com

t

tOh, and by the way, don’t feel like you have to wait until spring to get started with these colors — I say the earlier, the better! What’s your favorite color in Pantone’s new palette?
