Turn seashells into beautiful candles with this easy DIY

Turn your collected seaside treasures into beautiful decorative candles. These homemade seashell candles can add a beach-inspired touch to your home. They are perfect for summer table settings and add a whimsical, romantic element to your home.

Follow this tutorial to make your own DIY seashell candles in a few easy steps. You can get most of the materials from your local craft store, and it should take only 20 to 30 minutes to make.

Materials & tools:

  • Wax candle flakes
  • Candle wicks or tea lights
  • Seashells
  • Glass container
  • Pot
  • Essential oils (optional)

Directions:

Step 1: Candle wicks

If you already have candle wicks, feel free to use them. But I have found that tea lights have the perfect size candle wicks for seashell candles. Just pop the candles out of the metal tins and push the wicks out with your fingers. (If you don’t have candle flakes handy, you can also use the wax from your tea lights.)

Step 2: Set up wicks in seashells

Stand up each of the wicks in the deepest part of the shells. Make sure the wicks are standing up straight and not bent over.

Step 3: Melt wax

Fill a saucepan with water to about the halfway mark. Place your measured amount of wax flakes in the glass container. Then place the glass container in the saucepan. Be sure the water level is low enough so it won’t splash into the wax flakes when it starts to boil. Turn your stove on to medium-high, and use a metal spoon to stir occasionally.

Step 4: Add scent (optional)

This is an optional step if you would like to add scent to your candles. Simply add 5 to 8 drops of essential oils to your melted wax and stir well.

Step 5: Pour wax into seashells

Place your shells on a flat surface lined with paper. Carefully pour your melted wax into each shell and stop at 1/3 inch from the rim. Let the wax cool and set.

Step 6: Light and enjoy

Once the wax has cooled and set, you’re ready to light your candles and enjoy.
