DAY 2: Tuesday
We spent Monday night at the Pasfield House in Springfield, Illinois. This is by far one of the most charming B&Bs I’ve ever stayed at. The owner was such a great guy, and quite the character, who told me all about the “Cult of Lincoln.” Yeah, there are hardcore Lincoln-lovers out there that travel around America researching and staying at places with any type of connection to good ol’ Honest Abe. In fact, the Pasfield House’s original owner is believed to have been a close, personal friend of Lincoln, so it’s acquired quite the status among his fans.
Bruce and I headed to the Cozy Dog Drive-In, a Route 66 establishment, for a late breakfast of corn dogs and french fries, because as they say, “When in Rome…” From there we doubled back to Atlanta, Illinois, which is this super-awesome small town with a massive statue of Paul Bunyan holding a hot dog. It doesn’t get more Route 66 than that. There’s also a secret arcade museum with all these vintage arcade games — no admission, just walk in and start playing.
From there we went to the World’s Largest Covered Wagon in Lincoln, Illinois. Bruce liked this roadside attraction a lot. He thought Lincoln was pretty funny sitting up there on his wagon reading a “Law” book. Definitely worth the stop.
Afterwards, we headed to Henry’s Rabbit Ranch in Staunton, Illinois. OMG, this place is mad cool. There are several VW Rabbit cars sticking out of the ground. There are so many photo ops here, and the owner is fabulous. He loves talking and is very friendly. He’ll even bring out one of his bunny rabbits for you to pet.
From there we headed to Pink Elephant Antiques where there are like tons of incredibly quirky fiberglass statues and a delicious ice cream stand. Perfect for this sweltering early-August heat. While we were in the area, we stumbled upon this amazing covered bridge. The Sugar Creek Covered Bridge is completely off the main road and you’d totally miss it if you didn’t know it was there. We ended up spending about 20 minutes just hanging out there. It was so peaceful, no one was around and it was such a great place to regroup after a whirlwind of a day. We finished up with a quick visit to the World’s Largest Catsup Bottle. A good photo op, but nothing really special about it.
