How to spike your favorite hair oil for extra oomph

It was just a few years ago that the beauty industry was adverse to anything oil. After all, it was the pore-clogging, hair-greasing product that was bound to weigh you down, right? Oh, how wrong we were. Today oil is used in everything from hair products to skin treatments, and Moroccan Oil (aka argan oil) is one of the best all-around oils on the market for all skin and hair types. Try pumping up your go-to brand with these other essential oils.

Peppermint

Whatever you do, don’t apply essential oils directly to your hair. You’ll need to “cut” these oils with a carrier oil that’s safe for all-over application. We love Suave’s Moroccan Infusion Styling Oil, available at Sam’s Club, for this very purpose. Add one drop of peppermint (this stuff is potent) to your styling oil and mix. Run your fingers through your hair, tie it back and let it soak overnight for a tingling, refreshing peppermint sensation. Wash your hair in the morning as usual and your hair will feel totally moisturized, fresh and rejuvenated.

Lavender

Lavender essential oil is the equivalent of sleepy time tea for your nose. Its delicate, soothing scent is known for its relaxing properties in aromatherapy. If you shower at night, this is the perfect essential oil for you. Add two to three drops of lavender essential oil into your favorite leave-in oil treatment and apply throughout your hair. A little bit goes a long way, so use sparingly.

Orange

If you have trouble retaining moisture in your hair, it’s never a good idea to apply citrus fruit directly to the follicles, as it will dry them beyond belief. If you want the smell of citrus without the stripping effect, orange essential oil might be just the scent you’re looking for. Add one to three drops to your favorite carrier oil and apply for a sweet, clean scent that everyone will instantly recognize.

Rosemary

Rosemary adds gusto to everything it touches. Whether it’s rosemary-flavored bread or rosemary-scented lotion, there’s something soothing about the woody herb. Cut your favorite carrier oil with a few drops of rosemary oil for a luxurious scalp massage.
