When the ASPCA was determining recipients for its 2014 Humane Awards, it is no surprise that it gave the ASPCA Tommy P. Monahan Kid of the Year award to Annika Glover from Killen, Alabama. This courageous and big-hearted girl has battled medulloblastoma, a type of cancerous brain tumor, for nearly the last four years, yet she hasn’t let cancer stop her from following her dreams of helping animals.
When she was just 9 years old, Annika Glover was a participant in the Make-A-Wish program, and she put her love for animals above her own human interests when she used her one wish to save animals in need. Her wish was granted by the Alabama chapter of Make-A-Wish, which donated $7,000 in Glover’s name to the Pets Are Worth Saving (PAWS) group in Florence, Alabama.
“I wanted to help animals a whole bunch. I grew up around animals and love them so much,” says Glover.
Glover has graciously received national recognition for her ASPCA award and selfless wish to help animals in need. However, she received even greater news in August 2014 when doctors told Glover and her family that her brain cancer was in remission. Glover is now a happy, healthy fifth grader who wants to do everything she can to help animals. She spends her spare time volunteering, fostering animals and educating people about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. Let her inspire you to reach out to others and pursue your dreams regardless of the obstacles you may face.
