When the holiday season rolls around, many women painstakingly coordinate their makeup, clothes and jewellery. If you’re planning on entertaining at home or hosting a holiday party, try these five tips to enhance your features by having your makeup complement your décor in matching hues.
From the experts
We asked three cosmetic experts to share their thoughts and tips that will have guests admiring both you and your holiday décor!
From cool to warm
According to Sally Robb Haims, public relations manager for The Body Shop, “Throughout the year, we naturally gravitate toward colours we like from clothing to makeup to décor. We choose shades that best suit our skin tone. How you decorate for your home for the holidays can also be reflected in your look when entertaining.
If your lights and Christmas tree feature sparkly silvers and bright blues, so should your evening party look. If you are more drawn to warm golds, bronze and deep reds, your look should reflect a warm golden glow. The goal is to enhance your environment, rather than clash with it.”
Try this
Haims suggests some products that could help enhance your holiday look, “Right before guests arrive, add a final finishing touch to your look with The Body Shop Brilliance Powder. For a cool look, choose limited edition Cranberry Brilliance Powder or, for a warm look, choose Bronze Brilliance Powder. Simply pump the dispenser four to five times to inject a burst of powder into the brush. Shake off the excess before applying to the forehead, nose, chin and décolletage. Just remember, less is more when it comes to sparkle, so don’t over do it.”

Senior Artist for M.A.C. Jane McKay gave us some makeup, holiday colour tips. “This holiday season, wrap yourself in shimmery festive colours that reflect your home holiday décor, whether you gravitate to cool/silver or warm/gold holiday colours, consider pairing your wardrobe and makeup to complement your festive decorating.
For example, cool-toned makeup looks fantastic set against white twinkle lights and silver accessories, whereas, gold looks stunning set against traditional warmer red tones.”
Sparkle in the right places
McKay says glowing skin is in, but cautioned not to overuse shine that accentuates imperfections. She suggests applying shiny products to the high planes of your face and body such as your brow, cheek and collarbone. McKay says a glowing skin gives a more youthful appearance, especially under glowing candlelight.

Caryl Baker, president of Caryl Baker Visage, says “Most women, myself included, tend to stick to familiar colour tones when buying makeup, clothes and décor items. Depending on their skin tone, hair and eye colour, some complexions look better with cool tones, while others look best with warmer shades.
To be sure you are making the right choice when adding unfamiliar colours to your makeup palate, consult with a professional makeup artist, so that your eye, lip and cheek tones are all either cool or warm,” Baker says.
