6 Travel tips for the winter traveler

Traveling during the winter months can be a hassle–especially when almost everyone is planning a trip. So whether you are going home for the holidays to see family or heading to a beach to enjoy a warm getaway, winter travel is rarely stress-free. So for those of you who are trying to keep your cool on your winter travels, we have 6 travel tips that will help you get out the door and on the road to your destination–hopefully with as few bumps as possible!

Book your Trip Early

Whether you’re planning to drive cross-country or fly to a tropical island this winter, remember to book early! Not only will you save money, but if you are traveling during the holidays you won’t have to worry about being stranded or stuck without a hotel, rental car or flight out. People who wait until the last minute have less options available during the winter months, when everyone is trying to escape the cold or visit family for the holidays.

Try to book your flights without connections if at all possible — this will save you time if there are cancellations and weather delays.

Check the weather!

If you’re taking a road trip or flying out to your destination, make sure you check the weather. The weather conditions not only affect how long it takes to drive to the airport but if there are delays in other cities due to winter snowstorms your flight might be delayed or even cancelled.

For those planning a cross-country trip, knowing the weather conditions is crucial so you can pack your car with blankets, water and a first aid kit [and whatever else is necessary] incase of a breakdown. Also you can plan to leave a different day and pick an alternate route if you know there is going to be a huge snowstorm or massive w h iteout.

If you are visiting family or friends let them know your itinerary — this way someone will know where you are in case something happens, like a storm, traffic delay or accident.

Be Airport Savvy!

If your travel plans include you going to the airport remember there are a few other things to consider that will save you time and sanity!

  • Dress in clothes and shoes you can take off easily, so security will go faster.
  • If flying get there 2 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours early for international flights.
  • Check the flight status before you leave your house.
  • Try to book the earliest flight out.
  • Don’t over pack your carry-on with extra junk — it slows you down during security and during the holidays everyone is overpacking and you might not have room to store your belongings overhead, which means less leg-room.
