4 ways to have great hair this winter

Winter is not kind to our hair. The cold temperatures, dry air and heated interiors all contribute to making hair staticky and sapped of moisture. But a few tweaks to your regular hair care routine can help keep your hair healthy and looking great.

Winter calls for a different set of rules when it comes to hair care. And getting your hair to behave is a lot easier than you may realize. Here are four ways to get great hair all season long.

Switch your shampoo and conditioner

Your favourite shampoo and conditioner that you’ve been using for ages (or even if only since the summer) may not be cutting it in this chilly weather. Getting a great head of hair starts in the shower with your shampoo and conditioner routine. With the harsh winter air and indoor heating zapping your hair of moisture, making it dry and brittle, you should use a more moisturizing set of products. Look for heavier products that will help coat the cuticle to keep it smooth and under control so it’s easier to style and so you experience fewer flyaways.

Style with a mousse or silicone-based product

Consider trying a mousse to style your hair, or other products that will coat the hair shaft similarly (ones containing silicone will work well). Coating each strand will add depth to it and make your hair more manageable overall. If you’ve been cursed with a case of the flyaways, quickly spritz a product such as Static Guard on your brush and then brush through your hair. If you have a dryer sheet handy, lightly smoothing it over your unruly hair will help tame it as well.

Use a weekly hair masque

Schedule a hair masque into your weekly routine to help prevent the brittleness and static that plagues us all this season. Comb the product through from roots to ends and wrap your hair in a towel or shower cap to help maintain warmth, which will help the masque penetrate the hair.

Add a leave-in conditioner to your collection of products

Even if you’ve switched to a winter-worthy shampoo and conditioner (see above), having a leave-in conditioner handy both at home and on the go is a good idea. Using it at home will help your hair from becoming a tangled mess and will help ensure the health of your hair, while having some in your handbag is a good way to tackle hair that’s been windblown. A small amount smoothed over your hair with a focus on the ends will help tame it into submission.
