Ponytails: New spins on an easy look

Swing a sexy ponytail for easy, sensationally flattering style!

What’s not to love about the ponytail? Hairstyles that are “too done” are so passe, and a ponytail can take you from the gym in the morning through your busy day with work and kids, and still look terrific for an evening out. There’s more than one way to wear a ponytail, so play with it to find the perfect ponytail for you!

Side ponytail

First, create a few waves with a wide-barrel curling iron. Just spritz styling spray on 2-inch sections of hair until it’s all worked. Now, finger-comb your waves into a ponytail, securing it at the side with a covered band. Wrap a section of hair around the band to hide it, and hold in place with a couple of bobby pins. If your hair is layered, the wispy side sections can be curled into teasing tendrils that will softly frame your face.

Sleek ponytail

This is an especially great ponytail look for women with straight hair and heavy bangs. Brush your hair back into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic. Tame those flyaways around the hairline with a shot of hairspray, and add a dab of shine serum for extra polish. Wear this look to the office or out to an elegant dinner. With the addition of dark sunglasses, you’ll look famous and fabulous!

Rumpled ponytail

This is the perfect ponytail for unwashed hair! And it’s also a great casual weekend or after-work look that’s quick and easy. Part hair in the middle or slightly off-centre, then rake hair back at the nape of your neck. Fasten the tail lightly so that it sits just below the middle at the back of your head. Scrunch the tail a few times once it’s in place and you’re good to go!

High ponytail

Swingy and sexy, the high, tight ponytail looks great day and night. This look works best with bangs, but women without them can adapt the look with a side part and the ponytail fastened slightly lower on their heads. Spray hair with a volumizing product and take a section of hair at the top part of the back of your head, teasing at the roots to create enough volume for a dramatic look. Carefully brush hair back into a high ponytail (just above ear level) and secure. You can gently pull on the hair at the top of your ponytail out and up for extra drama.

Half-up, half-down ponytail

Long hair looks luscious in a half-up, half-down ponytail. Part hair from ear to ear, dividing into a top and bottom section. Brush the top section into a ponytail and secure. Take the point of a rattail comb and put it under your hair just at the crown, gently coaxing it into a slight puff. Comb out the bottom section and smooth the ponytail over the length.
