Gather the family for fun times in Quebec City!
Quebec City is the capital of the Canadian province of Quebec and is the second-most populous city in the province (the first is Montreal). The city’s most famous landmark is the Château Frontenac, a hotel whose profile dominates the skyline. Quebec City boasts 33 National Historic Sites of Canada, and is well-known for its Winter Carnival, its summer music festival, and its Saint Jean Baptiste Day celebrations.
There are numerous activities ideal for family fun and adventure here, both indoors and out. From historic sites, art galleries and museums to sporting venues and outdoor recreation, the options can be enjoyed in every season.
Kid-sized fun
Parc Aquarium du Québec is located on a site overlooking the Saint Lawrence River and presents more than 10,000 specimens of mammals, reptiles, fish and aquatic fauna of North America and the Arctic. Children are fascinated by the polar bears and various species of seals in the Arctic section, and equally entertained by the Large Ocean, a huge basin that offers visitors a view from under the sea.
A bike ride is a great way to explore Quebec City and there are several companies that will equip the entire family with bikes and appropriate safety gear for a ride around Old Port or the beautiful Promenade Samuel-de Champlain along the riverfront.
In Quebec City, many of the museums are anything but boring for kids, with special exhibitions and activities specifically designed for them. The Musée de la Civilisation is one such place, offering workshops, shows and discovery areas for children.
At Canyon Sainte Anne Trails suspension bridges, giant potholes and a 74-metre waterfall welcome families to this beautiful area. At ground level there’s a Fun Zone, featuring storytelling, a giant jigsaw puzzle, and an extra-long zipline for the more adventurous. Or, venture into the woods in the company of gnomes at the enchanted forest of La Vallée Secrète in Portneuf. The Jacques-Cartier area is the perfect place for families to enjoy winterslides, cross-country and alpine skiing, or ice skating. And weather is no barrier to fun at the Galeries de la Capitale’s Mega Parc, an indoor amusement park with 20-plus rides, including a rollercoaster and ferris wheel. Kids will have a blast climbing the rope apparatus and climbing wall, or the entire family can compete in a game of bowling or miniature golf, and glide together around the skating oval. On scorching summer days, a great desination is Valcartier Vacation Village, where everyone can cool off and have some laughs on the 35 water slides.
There are parks with trails for hiking, biking, walking and Rollerblading in and around Quebec City, and plenty of green spaces along the waterfront to enjoy a family picnic. More adventurous nature lovers might try the treetop experience offered by several companies in Quebec City: a guided tour and absolute adrenaline rush as your family is led at your own rhythm and ability level on trails through the highest treetops. Or, challenge your family at Super Labyrinthe Inukshuck, an educational and giggle-inducing two- to three-hour adventure featuring 276 one-way doors. The goal is to find the centre of this circular wooden labyrinth, reminiscent of the western forts from pioneer days.
