Backyards are truly a blessing and are often undervalued. They are amazing for barbeques and gardening; but they can be great for day-to-day usage, too — like your own personal park space. And spring is just the perfect time to prepare your backyard for summer living.
Gardening
First and foremost, keep your grass in shape. Grass can be fried and full of weeds post-winter. Water it heavily and either pull out the weeds yourself or hire someone to do it right the first time. Make sure to mow your lawn regularly and water your plants. If you love to garden, sprinkle your soil with seeds and bulbs. If you don’t have the time or passion to garden and plant from scratch, invest in a tree or two and a few flower-filled planters to add colour and life to your backyard. Think of the plants as equivalent to the ornaments and decorations you have inside. The more visually appealing a place is, the more likely you are to spend time in it.
Fixtures
Depending on the size of your backyard, add a table and a few chair and invest in a good patio set that will last for several years rather than buying a cheap one that you will replace every season. You can add a decorative wall lamp or two to add a bit of elegance to your backyard, and it will slowly feel like part of the house. Start your outdoor decorating with little things inside, like travel-size pictures or inspirational quotes hanging on the walls by the door to the backyard, and a little “welcome to my garden” sign or mat, which you can find at most stores. Be creative and make it your own, and it will slowly blend with the rest of your house.
Spend more time outdoors
Have a Sunday family breakfast in your backyard; or, sit and read there around sunset, listening to some music while sipping on some tea for a quiet evening. Keep some some bug spray at hand, or stick a few citronella candles around your yard and light them when you need to; these are strong insect and bug repellents which will work hand-in-hand with the bug spray. Before you know it, your backyard will be your new, favourite spot for spring and summer.
