Whether you’re the new one on the block or you simply don’t know you neighbours that well, it’s not too late to change that. We are becoming more and more isolated as our independence level grows. And while we may not have to knock on our next-door neighbours’ door for some milk, we can still share an acquaintanceship and good conversations.
It’s not impossible to get to know your neighbours. Kids do it all the time, playing with those around them who seem to fit the criteria they have in mind; namely, age and the kind of games they are playing. So we actually might have a thing or two to learn from kids: It’s time we found ways to befriend our neighbours.
Share food
Good old-fashioned welcome cakes have always worked and they continue to work. But, we can modernize them just a tad. You don’t have to wait for a new neighbour to move in; simply share your specialty and your culture with those around you. Making some cupcakes for a birthday? Send some to the neighbours around you. Embrace your culture and your grandma’s recipes by sharing them with your neighbours and soon you will start a trend and a few conversations.
Tea gathering
Invite your neighbours over. It might be strange to just knock on someone’s door and ask them to talk. But, if you are inviting a few other families (this can be a family thing, or just ladies), it won’t be as awkward. Have a ladies’ tea gathering at your home or host a purse party. Or, better yet, welcome everyone to spring refreshments in the backyard. Gathering a few neighbours in one place will get conversations going and will make you all comfortable to talk and get to know one another.
Involve the kids
Kids seem to make friends way faster and easier than adults. So, why not take advantage of that? When celebrating your kid’s birthday, see which neighbourhood friends he/she plays with and invite their families along, for a chance to get to know them better. You can also schedule play dates or have the kids over to your home for a movie night. Regardless of the activity, the whole point is to get to know your neighbours.
