Often times it’s hard to find that perfect pillow. We can’t find the shape, the color or the size we are looking for. Stop fretting and start making your own pillows!
Materials
- fabric
- scissors
- needle
- thread
- polyester stuffing (Poly-Fil)
Pre-implementation
First and foremost, choose the fabric and the shape you want your pillow to take. Remember, the pillow doesn’t have to be a sleeping pillow. It can be a decorative pillow to add color to your sofa or big pillows placed by rugs. It all depends on your home and your décor. You want to pick a fabric that complements the rest of your décor and the place where you’re going to be placing your pillow. Once you do, pick a shape and a size. If you are new to sewing, stick to circular, squared, rectangular or heart shapes till you are more comfortable.
The case
You want to start with the case. Trace out the shape on your fabric using a pencil and start cutting out. To ensure equal proportions, use the same shape you have just cut out and cut out another replica of it. Now, turn your fabric inside out and starting sewing the different sides together, leaving one edge/side unsewn. Now, flip it out so it’s no longer inside out.
Stuffing
Once you’ve turned the case out, start stuffing it with polyester stuffing (it can be found at Wal-Mart or Michael’s). Do not overstuff it or under stuff it — you want to have just enough room to sew the last edge/side. Once you are done stuffing, start sewing the last two sides together and try to pick a thread that matches the fabric so it blends well. You pillow is then ready to be used!
