Enjoy spring weather in Toronto

The minute milder temperatures herald the beginning of spring, Canadians look to get outside, shake off winter’s cabin fever and enjoy outdoor activities. Get inspired by these ideas on how to get out in the sunshine and enjoy spring weather in Toronto and the GTA (Greater Toronto Area)!

Go wild

Many people in Canada pack up the kids, strollers and picnics and head for a zoo at the first sign of spring weather. The Toronto area boasts more than a few choices when it comes to zoos that are open year round, beginning with the incredible Metro Toronto Zoo, which houses over 5,000 animals representing over 500 species! The zoo includes a 10-acre Tundra Trek, underwater viewing area and Great Barrier Reef exhibit. Riverdale Farm offers 7.5 acres of pathways to enjoy right in Toronto’s downtown core, with farm animals on display. High Park Zoo is an admission-free attraction, but it is facing closure. If you’re willing to venture an hour and a half away, Peterborough’s Riverview Park & Zoo is also open year round, and admission is free. It has 27 exhibits, 48 species, a large playground and a walking path along the Otonabee River.

Maple syrup festivals

Spring is the season to get out in the fresh air and indulge in a little educational fun. The sap is running, and it’s amazing to see how it’s boiled down to make maple syrup — and then to taste it, of course! There are numerous maple syrup festivals and sugar bushes to visit in Toronto and the GTA during March and April, many offering music, hayrides, pancake breakfasts and maple products for purchase.

Hit the trails

In the spring, many Canadians are drawn to riding, walking and hiking trails, which are finally free of snow and ice. Whether you want to enjoy fresh air and sunshine or seriously work off some winter weight, Toronto and the GTA offer an astounding number of options. If your bike beckons in the spring, check out the Toronto Cycling Map to find out the best places to cycle in the city, or travel on the ferry and experience the trails on the Toronto Islands, beginning in mid-April. If you’re more into hiking or walking, the Ontario Trails Council offers an in-depth look at the many trails in Toronto and the GTA as well as all over Ontario. Urban, natural and scenic trails are all represented. For a different type of trail riding experience, head out into the spring sunshine on horseback! Trail rides are offered all over Toronto and area at equestrian centres such as The Ranch in Oakville.
