While you can’t wait to sunbathe and work on your tan this summer, it is important to do so wisely. Tanning in the hot sun can easily leave you looking like a lobster, or worse — a killer whale. Besides the embarrassing uneven tan lines, you may even damage your skin. There are some things you can do to ensure your skin is healthy and glows this summer. Below are tips to enjoy the sun safely this summer!
Use sunscreen
This is the most obvious thing you should do this summer. Use enough sunscreen on your body and on your face every day. To be safe, go for a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to protect your skin from the hot sun. Be sure to replace your sunscreen each summer, as it’s not meant to last for more than one year. Also remember to apply it evenly so that you’re not left with patches of sunburned skin.
Get your antioxidants
While it’s important to get your antioxidants internally by eating healthy foods rich in antioxidants like blueberries or pomegranates, it’s also important to apply creams rich in antioxidants. Creams and lotions that include grape seed, green tea or pomegranate extract are great in helping to protect skin from cell damage caused by sunburns.
Keep your eye on the time
If you’re planning a beach day where you’re likely to lie on a towel and catch some rays, be sure to keep your eye on the time. This means alternating the body areas that are directly exposed to the sun. Doing this keeps your tan even so you don’t end up looking like a killer whale. While you shouldn’t stay in the sun for too long, be sure to reapply a waterproof sunscreen every one to two hours.
Stay hydrated
Drinking enough water, especially on hot days, is your best defence against dehydration and aging skin. Aim for six to eight glasses of water a day. Take water bottles when you head out this summer, especially if you’re going to be outdoors for a while. Fruits like watermelon are also a great summer treat that will keep you hydrated.
