Are you frustrated with cellulite on your thighs, bum, stomach or arms? Many women feel uncomfortable about skin dimples, and over time, that can wear on self-esteem. We share some potential treatments that just may help eliminate cellulite.
What is cellulite?
Cellulite is the result of uneven fatty tissue below the surface of the skin. This uneveness causes dimpling often compared to cottage cheese or an orange peel. In some cases, cellulite may be visible only when the skin is pinched. But in more serious scenarios, it can lead to raised peaks and dimples in the affected area. Cellulite is most commonly noticed on the thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen and upper arms. Although it is not a cause for alarm, many women find it unsightly and would prefer to diminish its appearance. The important thing to remember is that you are dealing with a complex tissue below the surface. This means many massages or creams that claim to yield amazing results may not provide the look promised. It is wise to always consult your doctor before beginning any sort of cellulite treatment.
Weight loss
According to the Mayo Clinic, weight loss through diet and exercise is probably the most effective cellulite treatment. Naturally when there is less fat layered under the skin’s surface, there is less cause for dimpling. However, human beings require a certain amount of fat to survive. If your body is prone to cellulite, it is unlikely to disappear completely with weight loss.
Radiofrequency
Radiofrequency treatments involve applying a deep, controlled heat to the fatty layers under the skin as a way to reduce the appearance of cellulite. The Consulting Room reports that through the tightening of tissue and increased blood circulation, fatty deposits are drained through the lymphatic system, resulting in a temporary reduction in cellulite’s appearance.
Endermologie
Endermologie is a type of deep-tissue massage first developped in France. It involves a device that suctions the skin and then kneads it with a set of rollers. This type of treatment can improve circulation and the overall appearance of skin. The good thing about endermologie is that it is non-invasive. Unfortunately, however, it is pricey, and results are not guaranteed.
Creams
CBC News reports that even though creams may contain ingredients such as retinol and caffeine (which should affect skin’s appearance), the root of the problem often lies deeper than such topical treatments can reach. Although research is ongoing and some creams may yield mild, temporary results, many doctors agree that cellulite creams aren’t really worth the effort or expense.
Stay positive
It is important to be realistic in your pursuit of cellulite elimination. Though you may notice some improvement with any given treatment, the chances of your cellulite disappearing completely is quite unlikely — and that’s OK. Cellulite is nothing to be ashamed of, and the majority of women deal with cellulite on a daily basis, so consider yourself in good company!
