Perfect for the dog days of summer, casual, easygoing, beachy waves are the way to go. Here’s how to get the look simply.
One of the most coveted hairstyles is also one that’s perfect for summer’s hottest days: loose, beachy waves (and you don’t have to be on the beach to sport this look). Think California beach babe hair. There’s something so sexy about the style in how easy and laissez-faire it looks. And the good news is that the style is pretty simple to achieve. Here are a few options for getting loose, natural-looking waves.
Braid your hair into waves overnight
Loosely braid large sections of slightly damp hair and secure the ends with an elastic. The more hair you include in the braid, the more subtle the wave will be, so if you want smaller, more obvious waves, create more braids overall. Sleep with your hair in the braids, and in the morning, undo the braids, shake out your hair and run your fingers through to loosen up the sections. Add a bit of styling hairspray, and you’re ready to go.
Twist yourself some waves
Blow-dry your hair with your head flipped forward to get volume at the roots until it’s almost dry but still a little damp. Then spray some texturizing product (such as Surf Spray from Bumble and Bumble or Greg May Ocean Spray) into your hair to give it a slight tackiness. Next, twist 1- to 2-inch sections of hair with your fingers to create individual waves. Help them hold by spritzing each twist with a working or styling hairspray. Don’t use a strong-hold hairspray, as you want the look to be casual and loose, not stiff!
Curl your hair into beachy waves
Although toying with hot hair styling tools is probably the last thing you want to do on a hot summer day, using a curling iron is a quick and efficient way to get the look. Once you’ve blow-dried your hair (again, with your head flipped forward to get volume at the roots), using a medium to large size curling iron, curl 2-inch sections of hair into loose waves. Use your fingers to mess up the perfect curls so the look is less fixed and more carefree.
