Our home and native land boasts some great beauty companies. Here are a few you should try out if you haven’t already.
Canadians are often characterized as humble, and perhaps we should toot our own country’s horn more, especially when it comes to beauty brands. It’s high time to shop local, ladies. Need some help? Here are three Canadian beauty brands you should get to know.
ILIA Beauty
Created by Sasha Plavsic in Vancouver, ILIA Beauty came to be when she read the ingredients of a tube of lipstick. This set her off to create a natural lip product that both performed and offered great colour. The company name comes from her great-grandfather’s name, but there’s more to it. In French, il y a translates to there is, and the founder was struck by the beauty of the notion “what there is, there is.” All the products in the beauty line are 85 per cent organic. We love them for the sleek but simple packaging, the nourishing ingredients, the fantastic colour payoff and the performance of the products, which range from skin illuminators to lipsticks.
Vasanti Cosmetics
We always feel confident when perusing the collection from Vasanti, as the products feature lightweight formulas, and the shades are designed to be universally flattering (no need to fret if a colour doesn’t suit your skin tone). Launched in 1999, Vasanti Cosmetics aims to offer products that celebrate your natural beauty, that are simple to apply and that won’t make you feel like you’re wearing a mask of makeup. The range of shades is broad, so you can rest assured there is one in the collection that works for you.
Elizabeth Grant
What helped launch this beauty company? Founder Elizabeth Grant discovered that a natural substance used to treat wounds in World War II could also be used to help heal her own damaged skin. Prior to making this discovery, she felt ashamed of her appearance and avoided venturing out in public as much as she could. Once the substance healed her skin, the entrepreneur launched the product to the public in 1958. The brand has since grown to include makeup, fragrance and skin care products that are sold around the world. A SheKnows Canada favourite? Golden Caviar Eye Pads.
